DX 5229 was built 1975 at General Electric, Erie, PA - GE U26C 40180 as DX 2620 (Co-Co, livery:NZR Clockwork Orange OrangeYellow), entered service 021976, renumbered c1979 to DX 5229, altered 10102001 at Woburn Shops (livery:Tranz Rail Bumble Bee Black(Charcoal)Yellow , fitted with air chute Ducts for Otira Tunnel, fitted with GE Brightstar adhesion control system), reclassified 2002 to DXH 5229, reclassified 2006 to DXB 5229 (fitted with AAR heavy drawgear), reclassified 2008 to DXC 5229 and , altered 16072012 at Woburn Shops (livery:Kiwirail , Mk II (Vertical Seperations of Main Colours on Car Body).49 of GE U26C (2600hp, Co-Co) numbered DX 2600-2648 were built in two batches, 1st 15 arrived in 1972 to 2nd 34 arrived in 1976 and were for the North Island Main Truck between Auckland and Wellington Erie, PA, USA. Since 1988 DXs have been in th e South Island due to the Electrification of the Main Truck between Hamilton Palmerston North. They were later rebuilt to DXB, DXC and DXR in the 1990s 2000s.
