Swedish Railways S class 2-6-2T 1178 stands in the yard at Wansford, 21st April 1979.  Locomotive History1178 was built in 1914 by Motala Verkstad, Sweden and when withdrawn in 1959 instead of being broken up it was put into the Swedish strategic reserve. It arrived in the UK for preservation in 1975 and in June 1977 it worked the Nene Valley Railways opening train. Being an ideal size for the line, economical, and easy to operate, 1178 was used frequently, however by 1985 it was stopped with leaking boiler tubes. Due to a motive power crisis, it was returned to traffic in 1989, after a very light overhaul. By 1992 the engine was in poor condition and was withdrawn. It has not run since.
